eResource Discriptions

Our online reference center is composed of online databases that the Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries provides access to free-of-charge to all residents of Newfoundland and Labrador.

These databases can be searched from any Public Library, home, office, school, college or university by using your Barcoded library card. If your library is not automated and you do not have a barcoded library card, your local librarian will provide you with a user name and password to access the databases.

What do the databases offer?

EBSCO Host is a multi resource database which will allow a patron to search several online database resources such as:

  1. Canadian Reference Center: Canadian magazines, newspapers, newswires and reference books. This resource includes leading Canadian and international (U.S./U.K) periodicals, full text books, biographies, and a Image Collection.
     
  2. MasterFILE Premier: Provides access to nearly 2000 general reference publications, with full text dating as far back as 1975. Covering virtually every subject area or general interest.
     
  3. Health Source (Consumer Edition): The richest collection of consumer health information. Providing information on many health topics including the medical, food sciences, nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health.
     
  4. NoveList: Search this resource to help a patron find all the novels or books written by a particular author that are similar to the one you just finished, or find book discussions guide or a book review. There are also school resources section which helps teachers find fiction bookson variouse topics.

World Book Encyclopedia Online

World Book Encyclopedia Online, gives you access to the most up-to-date encyclopedia including World Book Kids. The online version of The World Book Encyclopedia provides access to: related articles from major newspapers and magazines; extensive graphic and multimedia enhancements, including photographs, maps, illustrations, tables, animations and audio/video clips, and much much more.

Logging on to the Databases:

If you have a barcoded library card please click on the barcode login link for the database you wish to access. If you do not have a barcoded library card, use the user name and password provided to you by your local library.

Canada's Information Resource Centre

An all-encompassing Canadian online source that provides access to eight databases- Canadian Almanac & Directory, Associations Canada, Libraries Canada, Canadian Parliamentary Guide, Canadian Environmental Resource Guide, Governments Canada, Financial Services Canada, and History of Canada. A virtual who's who and what's where in Canada. Now including Canadian Who's Who - giving you access to 23,000 influential Canadians (13,000 current biographies, and 10,000 archive listings).
 

Consumer Health

A rich collection of consumer health information. This database also includes full-text for current, health-related pamphlets and health reference books. It provides information on many health topics including the medical, food sciences, nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health.

Consumer Reports

ConsumerReports.org provides ratings and reviews, recommendations and buying advice for thousands of products and services. Frequently updated articles, blogs and video content allow consumers to peruse the latest consumer news.

Master File Premier

Provides full-text access to nearly 1,700 periodicals covering general reference, business, health, education, general science, multicultural issues and much more. This database also contains an Image Collection of photos, maps & flags.

Novelist Plus

Contains information on over 250,000 fiction and readable nonfiction titles, plus feature content including lists of award-winning books, series, book discussion guides, book talks, Recommended Reads and more. Search this resource to find all the novels or books written by a particular author that are similar to the one you just finished, or to find book reviews.

PubMed (Health)

PubMed comprises more than 20 million citations for biomedical literature. These citations may include links to full-text content from PubMed Central and publisher web sites. PubMed is maintained by the United States National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Tumble Books Story Books

An online collection of TumbleBooks – animated, talking picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they will love. TumbleBooks are created by adding animation, sound, music and narration to existing picture books in order to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you.

TumbleBooks Cloud

An online collection of read-along and e-book titles for older elementary, middle and high school students, which features adjustable online text and complete audio narration. Sentences are highlighted as they are being read and the pages turn automatically. The collection includes classic literature, Shakespeare, YA/teen novels, and a growing number of exciting graphic novels. TumbleBookCloud can be used on any computer or iPad thanks to Cloud Computing.

World Book Online Suite

 
World Book Encyclopedia Online, gives you access to the most up-to-date encyclopedias including WBO for Kids; WBO Info Finder; WBO Reference Center; a Spanish Encyclopedia; a French Encyclopedia.
