How to get a card
Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador may obtain a library card from any branch, with one piece of identification with a unique number (Driver's License, Student Id). You must have documentation showing your current home address to get a library card.
Those under 13 years of age need a parent or guardian to sign the registration form, and to assume the legal responsibility for materials
borrowed from the Library.
To obtain more information about getting a library card, please call your nearest public library. The phone number and hours of operation of all of our libraries can be found on our website under "About NLPL- Locations" or in the yellow pages under "Libraries."
If you live more than 24 kilometres from a public library, you may be eligible for our Books By Mail program. Please ask library staff about this service.
Registering Online for a Library Card
You must be a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador to use the Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries' eLibrary to download audiobooks and ebooks. If you don't already have a library card, you can register using our online form. Once the online form is completed the system will assign you a temporary barcode number. Please ignore this number as it will NOT work with our eLibrary. Within 24 hours (on weekdays), you will be sent an email with the 14 digit barcode of your library card. You can then use that 14 digit number and the PIN which you created when you registered to sign in to the eLibrary site and checkout ebooks and audiobooks.
Your library card will be mailed to the address you have typed into your registration. Should it be determined that the address is not in Newfoundland and Labrador or is a fake address, your registration record will be deleted from the system.
If you want to use this library card to check out books in your local library, you would need to visit a library and present an ID. Staff can then update and complete your registration. If you are under the age of 13, you will need to be accompanied by your parent who will present their ID and sign your card.
If you live 24km from the nearest community library, you can also use the Books by Mail Service to obtain print books.
After you click the link to the Online Registration Form, you will need to select the New User button.
Borrowing Rules and Privileges
We assume the person presenting a card is the cardholder or has been authorized by the cardholder to use the card, unless the card has been reported lost or stolen.
Your library card must be presented to borrow materials and use computer services.
If your library card is lost or stolen, report it immediately by phone, in person or by e-mail.

Fines
You are responsible for the full replacement costs for any books, magazines, audiobooks, CDS or DVDS that you lose or damage. In the case of a damaged multi-set CD/DVDS you will be charged the cost of replacing the complete set if we cannot purchase replacement copies of the damaged disc. Your borrowing privileges will be suspended until you pay the full amount of this fee.
- Borrowing and computer privileges will be suspended if you have more than $5.00 owing.
- You are responsible for all items checked out on your card and for any charges on items that are overdue, lost or damaged.
