Requesting a Hold

After doing a search, you may want to see if a particular item is available for checkout. You can do this by requesting the item. If the item is available, HIP directs you to check the shelves. If the item is not available, you can make a hold request. The library will then hold the item for you when it becomes available. You can request the first available item or a specific item (or copy of the title).

Attention Books by Mail Patrons – you cannot place holds through our online catalogue this time. Please email wbm@ill.nlpl.ca for your book requests.

How to Request a Hold on a Library Item

  1. Search for a library item.

  2. Do one of these options:

    • If you want to request the first available item, click Request Item next to the item that you want.

    • If you want to request a specific item, display the detailed information about the title (or the full bibliographic information) and click Request Copy next to the copy that you want.

If the item is available, HIP displays a message saying that the item is available on the shelf for checkout.

  3. Log in to your user account.

HIP displays the Request Confirmation page. You can see the number of your hold position (or the order in which requests for this item will be filled).

  4. If available, choose a notification method from the drop-down list.

  5. If available, choose a pickup location from the drop-down list.

  6. Enter any additional information in the Comment field.

  7. Click Request.

HIP displays a message saying that your request has been placed successfully.

Detailed Item Information

After doing a search, you may want to view more information about a particular item listed in the search results. Information Portal can display holdings information (availability) for the item, a brief summary of the item, links to more items by the same author or related subjects within the library, links to online bookstores that may carry the item for purchase, or links to related subjects on the World Wide Web.

If a particular item is available at other library locations, you can see holdings information for those locations by clicking the Other Locations button under the Copy/Holding information. If you do not have an Other Locations button, this item is only available at this location.

How to View Detailed Information for a Specific Item

  1. Search for a library item.

Information Portal returns your search results as a list of titles.

  2. Click the title of the item whose detailed information you want to view.

Information Portal displays information for the title. If any item is available at another library, Information Portal displays the Other Locations button.

Tip: If the item is part of a multi-volume set, you can see the volumes (V1., V2., and so forth) that apply to the item in the Copy/Holding information section.

  3. Do one or more of these options:

    • If you want to see holdings information for another location, click Other Locations.

    • If you want to see more information for a volume in a set, click the Volume link.

Limiting Your Results

If you have too many titles in your search results after doing a Basic, Advanced, or Power Search, you can shorten the list by applying limits. Limits let you exclude or include only certain items in your search results. You can choose from any pre-defined limits (such as video, CD, publication date, or author), or define your own limits to display your results.

Tip: You can choose limiting options before Information Portal displays search results when you do an Advanced Search.

How to Limit your Search Results

  1. Search for a library item.

    HIP displays your search results.

  2. If you want to use a pre-defined limit, choose a limiting option from the Limits list.

You can choose multiple limits by holding down CTRL and clicking each limit that you want to use.

  3. If you want to define your own limits, choose a limit type and operator, then enter the limiting value under User Defined Limits.

  4. If you are limiting by multiple limit criteria, choose another limit type and operator, then enter the limiting value under User Defined Limits.

(For example, you can limit your search results to titles published between 1990 and 2000.)

  5. Click Go.

HIP returns a list of search results based on the limit you chose.
