Newfoundland & Labrador Books

The NL Collection comprises a comprehensive collection of Newfoundland and Labrador books dating from the early 1600s to the present.

Many of the books date to the 18th and 19th centuries. The earliest works are Sir Richard Whitbourne’s A Discourse and Discovery of Newfoundland, 1622 and William Vaughan’s The Golden Fleece, 1626.

All books are catalogued and can be accessed using the Horizon Information Portal (HIP) catalogue.

Newfoundland & Labrador Periodicals

The NL Collection attempts to acquire all magazines and newsletters published in the Province. The Periodical Collection contains many notable items such as the Christmas numbers of many magazines from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and such genealogical treasures as the Diocesan Magazine, indexed from 1889 to 1958.

A list of holdings is available in the NL Collection. NL magazines are fully indexed in the Newfoundland Periodical Article Bibliography (PAB), compiled in the Centre for Newfoundland Studies, Memorial University Libraries.

TheDirectory of Newfoundland and Labrador Magazines includes magazines published in Newfoundland and Labrador and held at the Centre for Newfoundland Studies, Memorial University Libraries and at the NL Collection, St. John’s Public Libraries.

Newfoundland & Labrador Newspapers

The NL Collection is the principal repository of original copies of Newfoundland and Labrador newspapers, the earliest of which is the 1810 issue of the Royal Gazette and Newfoundland Advertiser. Many of the newspapers are available on microfilm. Two series of 19th century newspaper indexes compiled by Gertrude Crosbie and Mildred Howard can be accessed in the NL Collection.

The Historical Directory of Newfoundland and Labrador Newspapers lists the NL Collection’s newspapers, in original and microform formats. Available in print in the NL Collection.

The Newfoundland Public Libraries Newspaper Index, developed by the Public Library System, is a computer generated index to various years of three daily newspapers, plus the Diocesan Magazine and the Newfoundland Churchman. Available in print in the NL Collection.

The NL Collection Card Index, which indexes several NL newspapers (1810-1963), is available for use in the NL Collection.

The Transcontinental Newsnet Archive provides an index to articles published in local Transcontinental Media newspapers since April 5, 1999.

Newfoundland & Labrador Government Publications

The NL Collection has a comprehensive collection of current and historical government documents. There is an almost complete set of the Journals of the House of Assembly, including departmental reports during the periods of representative and responsible government. The Collection also includes Canadian and British documents relating to Newfoundland. Most government publications are catalogued and can be accessed using the Horizon Information Portal (HIP) catalogue. Since 1995/96, publications of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador are available online.

Newfoundland & Labrador Maps

The NL Map Collection consists of 1200 maps dating from the 17th century, with the majority originating from before 1900. All maps are catalogued and can be accessed using the Horizon Information Portal (HIP) catalogue or the Newfoundland and Labrador Map Bibliography, compiled by the Map Library, Memorial University Libraries.

Newfoundland & Labrador Photographs

The Photograph Collection of over 4000 is particularly strong on scenes of St. John’s in the early 20th century and scenes of communities on the east coast. Copies of most photographs can be ordered or scanned using equipment in the library. Indexes are available for use in the NL Collection.

Newfoundland & Labrador Post Card Collection

The Post Card Collection is comprised of over 600 historical post cards produced in Newfoundland, Canada and the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Copies of post cards can be ordered or scanned using equipment in the library. An index is available for use in the NL Collection.

Newfoundland & Labrador Archival Materials

The NL Collection has a variety of archival materials and manuscripts such as the Sweetman and Saunders Letter Book (1788-1804), manuscripts of Harold Horwood’s novel, Tomorrow Will Be Sunday, 18th century court records of Ferryland, Placentia, St. John’s and Trepassey, and personal papers relating to organizations, companies and individuals. Finding Aids are available for use in the NL Collection.

NL Vertical File Materials

The NL Collection has a series of information files on people, places, ships and various topics relating to Newfoundland and Labrador. Indexes are available for use in the NL Collection.
