Home Reader Service
Available only in St. John's and Corner Brook
Are you unable to get out to a library due to disability or illness?
Do you know of someone who is in this situation?
The Home Reader Service in St. John's and Corner Brook deliver materials free of charge to residents of either community free of charge if they are:
- senior citizens who cannot visit the library
- visually or physically challenged persons or
- persons living in care facilities, seniors housing, or hospitals.
The service will deliver new books and take back previous material on a rotating schedule.
- The service can bring you:
- books in regular and large print
- talking books *
- audio books

* What are talking books?
St. John's houses a Provincial Talking Book collection available by mail province wide, in person at the A.C. Hunter Library and through the St. John's Home Reader Service. Borrowers of this collection must complete an application for the Talking Book service and either have a CNIB number or supply a doctor's note which describes and documents the physical, visual or other concerns which prevent the customer from reading the regular print collection.
The Talking Book collection has some cassette CNIB materials with restricted access, but the bulk of the collection is on CD and includes popular titles without restricted access. We provide duplicate copies of these popular audiobooks in the collection so that these titles are readily available for customers who cannot use the regular print materials. Only Talking Book customers can place holds on and borrow items from this special collection.
